Become a B Corp in 7 steps
March 11, 2024
The B Impact Assessment tool is used to assess a company's social and environmental impact. This assessment covers areas such as governance, employees, the community, the environment and customers.
Once the initial assessment has been completed and the results reviewed, the company can identify areas for improvement and take steps to enhance its practices in those areas. This may include modifying its policies, implementing new sustainable practices or improving working conditions for its employees.
The company prepares and submits all the documents required to support its good practices and internal policies. Once the assessment has been submitted, it will be reviewed by B Lab, which may request additional evidence or clarification of certain information.
An independent B Lab analyst conducts a verification interview to review the assessment and discuss any items requiring clarification. Some candidates will be selected for a random audit as part of the verification process. It's a bit like taking a final exam after a long night of revisions, except that these "revisions" have lasted months and involve real transformations for the company.
To be eligible, companies must obtain a minimum score of 80 out of 200 points.
The company may have to modify its legal structure to reflect its commitment to social and environmental well-being. In some countries or regions, B Corp-certified companies must modify their legal structure to incorporate decision-making based on the interests of workers, customers, the community and the environment.
Once the whole process has been finalized, the company can finally sign the B Corp Agreement and become a member of the worldwide group of B corporations.
B Corp certification is valid for three years. During this time, the company is obliged to meet the required high standards, and will undergo the B impact assessment again to renew its certification.
B Corp certification is not the end of the journey, but a starting point for continuous improvement and a commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices. By becoming a B Corp, companies don't just go with the flow; they pave the way for a more sustainable and equitable future.
So there you have it: the road to certification can be fraught with pitfalls, but it's also a rewarding adventure, full of discovery and significant improvements. It demonstrates real social and environmental responsibility.
